Nazis with cats

Animals hanging out with soldiers isn't a new subject (as in "Cry 'Havoc!', and let slip the dogs of war!"), but seeing these Nazi soldiers with kitties is a bit disconcerting to me.

  1. Did Art Spiegelman have anything to do with this?

  2. That last picture is from the First World War, not the Second. The Helmet and the Gas Mask are both WWI Imperial German Army issue.

  3. How do you know that any of those soldiers are Nazis?

    1. 4th pic down shows guys in leafy camo smocks. These were pioneered by the waffen SS - I don't think the regular army ever formally adopted them. So you might guess these guys were waffen SS, hence party members. Or, they might have been regular army that just borrowed the gear. So, yeah.

    2. No, membership in the NSDAP was not required for SS membership.

  4. The first pic is Alfred Grislawski, a 109 kill ace.

    ...lived until 2003.

  5. Hitler was a vegetarian and staunch animal right activist. He was the first to implement governmental protections for nature and wildlife, tried to outlaw kosher butchering which is very cruel and Germany was also first to implement limits on number of animals taken for hunting.
