Vince Guaraldi. Cool.
ReplyDeleteGeorge Washington copied in his notebook sayings from a Jesuit schoolbook. He absorbed its lessons. Eventually, he wrote what was the equivalent of his own code for a gentleman and humane person and good citizen and good Christian. Many, many American school children over the centuries were schooled in the code that Washington derived from the Jesuits.
ReplyDeleteNote that Washington freed his slaves upon his death. Jefferson did not because he could not afford it; indeed, he got needed money for his lavish lifestyle from selling his books to the Library of Congress. When JFK quipped about a gathering at the White House being the best gathering of intelligence at the White House since Jefferson dined alone, he could have added that the meals of Jefferson were the most expensive in the history of the White House and contributed to his indebtedness. Of course, Washington had no children. Jefferson seems to have spawned illegitimate children with his slave.
