I shipped whales, elephants, ostriches, pigs (ugh), etc for Evergreen - an all cargo 747 carrier that bit the dust in 2014. The trick I learned with whales was not to fill the tanks fully with water but to use styrofoam pellets. They weigh less than water - on aircraft every pound of cargo you carry counts against your fuel burn - and spread the weight smoothly.
